We’re taking time out from the fast moving world of technology and constant drumbeat of information to remember Grace Hopper, who’d have been 107 years old today. You’ve probably already seen the Google doodle in commemoration.
Hopper was a pioneer and an innovator. Her resume is a ginormous laundry list of “firsts”. She was the first woman to graduate from Yale with a PhD in Mathematics. She was the first woman to make “admiral” in the US Navy. She was one of the first people to work on the Navy’s first computers (like I said, lots of firsts). She also did the computer world a solid by teaching computers how to talk, using the coding language of COBOL.
Hopper is even credited with coining the term “bug” when referring to computers.
Here she is on Letterman, being her awesome, spitfire self.
Yeah, that “Amazing” thing really does apply to her, doesn’t it?
