Scale Mt. Default at WebVisions NYC – Win an iPad!

Live type is revolutionizing web design. No longer do designers and developers need to choose from a limited set of six typefaces – with WebINK, overcoming the obstacles of default fonts is a thing of the past.

As a fun way to celebrate the new era of web typography, WebINK will set up the Mt. Default photo backdrop at WebVisions NYC on Jan. 20th – take your picture in mountain climbing gear and post it on Twitter with the text “I scaled Mt. Default!” and include the hashtag #WebINKphoto.

David Stump (@davidstump) had the winning photo in Atlanta. WebVisions NYC attendees who post their awesome and hilarious photos will be entered to win an iPad.

It was another great year for WebVisions…except for some audio issues on Thursday (which we addressed for Friday), the show went off without a hitch. Much thanks to Kent Derek, our house photographer, for his collection of event pix which were posted on our Flickr account by Eli. Take Home a Robot — or Two

The Webvisionary Awards submissions deadline has been extended to Friday, April 23rd, so if you haven’t bucked up the courage to submit your winning work, take a shot of rocket fuel and pony up! The Webvisionary Awards honors the most visionary, daring, and curious talent on the web by awarding them with a miniature robot. This quirky (we mean that in a good way) award show is different in every way, other than the winners receiving an award part. There are all-star judges, a comedian for a host, a killer DJ to supply the beat, and Presentation Karaoke to kick it off.

Beer and Blog – Twitter Wars

WebVisions is coming next month and to get things heated up, we want to start a war. A Twitter War that is! Here’s how it works:

Panels of the brightest and loudest technological minds at Beer and Blog will debate against one another with winners decided by viewers via Twitter. Each topic will have a panel of 4 participants. The topics are:

* #Javascript vs. #Flash
* #Wordpress vs #Drupal
* #Firefox vs. #Safari
* #Facebook vs. #Twitter
* #Bridgeport vs. #Deschutes

Each panelist will have one minute to state their case, followed by 3 minutes of free-for-all. People can comment and vote via twitter the entire time. The judges are Brad Smith, Executive Director; Stephanie Wagner, WebVisions Board Member; and Chris Alan from Enact Development. They will be pulling new tweets every 10-15 seconds, and showing ones the judges likes. Judges will determine the best panelist and the best audience comment to win a free pass to WebVisions! If you already have a pass, sorry the prize is not available to you. Second place winners will receive a WebVisions T-shirt.

Everyone Loves to Win

The Webvisionary Awards recognizes outstanding work in categories that range from web apps to community sites. But more importantly, it’s a chance to strut your stuff in front of a panel of big-name judges and your peers. The cost is only $25 per entry, so submit your project today and take home some metal for your mantle. Entries will be accepted through May 8th, but don’t wait until the last minute.

Netdiver – and Why We Love Facebook

Carole Guevin is the editor and founder of Netdiver, a site that’s dedicated to design and digital culture, and we ran into her via the “People You May Know” feature on Facebook. While I’m baffled by the algorithm that Facebook uses for this (it doesn’t seem to be related to whether a person is connected to my friends), it’s a pretty cool tool and we’ve reconnected with old friends and business associates with whom we’d lost touch. Carole kindly added WebVisions and the Webvisionary Awards to Netdiver’s events page and we hope to actually meet her in person one fine day.

WebVisions Day One After Party

It’s official…the WebVisions Day One After Party will be held from 6:00-10:00pm at rontom’s on East Burnside. It’ll be loads of fun and a great way to chill with fellow attendees after the first day of the conference. The party will be kicked off by the Webvisionary Awards, which will be held from 6:00-8:00pm and feature Portland entertainer and social gadfly Andrew Dickson as master of ceremonies.

Webvisionary Awards: Submit Your Work

The first annual Webvisionary Awards is accepting submissions of outstanding work in a range of categories, from mashups and pimped out personal pages to advertising and mobile. Entries must be submitted by May 9th and there will be a fee of $15 per submission. The winners of the competition will be announced on Thurs., May 22nd at the Webvisionary Party, which will be held from 6:00 – 8:00pm at rontom’s on East Burnside.
