WebVisions is coming next month and to get things heated up, we want to start a war. A Twitter War that is! Here’s how it works:

Panels of the brightest and loudest technological minds at Beer and Blog will debate against one another with winners decided by viewers via Twitter. Each topic will have a panel of 4 participants. The topics are:

    * #Javascript vs. #Flash
* #Wordpress vs #Drupal
* #Firefox vs. #Safari
* #Facebook vs. #Twitter
* #Bridgeport vs. #Deschutes

Each panelist will have one minute to state their case, followed by 3 minutes of free-for-all. People can comment and vote via twitter the entire time. The judges are Brad Smith, Executive Director; Stephanie Wagner, WebVisions Board Member; and Chris Alan from Enact Development. They will be pulling new tweets every 10-15 seconds, and showing ones the judges likes. Judges will determine the best panelist and the best audience comment to win a free pass to WebVisions! If you already have a pass, sorry the prize is not available to you. Second place winners will receive a WebVisions T-shirt.

WebVisions Speaker Series – Thursday, March 19, 6:30-8:00pm

As part of the WebVisions Speaker Series, Adam Ware of SwellPath will discuss how tracking activity on web sites used to be all about the page views and visit paths. Now, dynamic content means most interaction is taking place between page loads. Getting web analytics tracking involved in this interaction is still often overlooked, avoided, or feared. This session examines good and bad ways to integrate web analytics tracking beginning in the design phase, and how doing so can benefit designers and developers as much as it benefits marketers. Learn how visitors are interacting with your work, and use the knowledge to drive your own personal design and development decisions.

Wed., Feb. 18, 6:30 to 8:00pm

Homophily describes the tendency of individuals to bond with people similar to themselves. It’s an obvious insight. But it also means everything to the analysis of any given online community. A web community’s success can be predicted almost entirely by asking: “Do the people drawn to this website share cultural traits with one another?”

This is why Microsoft can’t launch a successful social network. While your average college radio station, or sports fan club, or local music scene are natural gathering places.

With web communities, technology isn’t important – it’s a culture thing.

About the Speaker

In 2005 Marcus Estes founded Tables Turned, a company dedicated to servicing non-commercial radio stations with freely licensed music for podcasts and internet radio. He also served on the board of directors for Portland Oregon’s Cable Access station and has contributed web expertise to a number of nonprofit organizations. In 2007 he helped launch WFMU’s Free Music Archive project, a social software and licensing website that aims to help save internet radio by lowering royalty payments for non-commercial radio stations. He now works for OpenSourcery helping non-profits find their way on the web.

We at WebVisions are all about the future of the web community. Local startups are really taking off, and this Saturday afternoon, Startupalooza is the place to be. Scott Kveton, who will be speaking at WebVisions, will demo Vidoop, a single sign-on tool using OpenID, that eliminates the need for passwords.

I just learned that Startupalooza is already ‘sold’ out. If you are in the midst of a startup, or just startup-curious, look for WebVisions sessions focusing on need-to-know topics for creating a new online businesss today. We guarantee plenty of hallway discussions around this topic. Especially since Rashmi Sinha, Andy Baio, Christina Wodtke and Brian Oberkirch will be in the house. We also would like to invite you register for Start Up Weekend, which starts Friday evening after the official close of WebVisions.

    * #Javascript vs. #Flash
* #Wordpress vs #Drupal
* #Firefox vs. #Safari
* #Facebook vs. #Twitter
* #Bridgeport vs. #Deschutes

The Webvisionary Awards recognizes outstanding work in categories that range from web apps to community sites. But more importantly, it’s a chance to strut your stuff in front of a panel of big-name judges and your peers. The cost is only $25 per entry, so submit your project today and take home some metal for your mantle. Entries will be accepted through May 8th, but don’t wait until the last minute.

The Webvisionary Awards ceremony will be held at the Bagdad Theatre on Thursday, May 21st from 7:30-9:00pm. Join our special guests, play presentation karaoke and more! The awards are sponsored by two of our favorite companies: WebTrends and 52 Ltd.

WebVisions Speaker Series / DevGroup NW
